What Is Somatic Experiencing?
A gentle way to work with your body’s inner wisdom
Many of us are taught to “think our way” through challenges. We analyze. We talk. We reflect. And while insight and conversation can absolutely be helpful tools, there’s a growing understanding—both in science and in practice—that the body plays an essential role in how we feel, heal, and relate.
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) invites the body into the conversation.
Rather than starting with the stories we tell in words, this approach begins with sensation. It explores how stress, tension, emotion, and memory live not just in our thoughts—but also in our tissues, breath patterns, and nervous system rhythms. Somatic Experiencing is grounded in the belief that regulation, balance, and clarity arise most sustainably when the body is part of the process.
Where It All Began: Dr. Peter Levine’s Somatic Lens
Somatic Experiencing was developed by Dr. Peter Levine, a biophysicist and psychologist who studied how animals in the wild respond to danger. He observed that, after high-stress encounters, animals instinctively release stored survival energy through shaking, trembling, deep breathing, or other natural behaviors—and then return to a baseline state of calm.
Humans, by contrast, tend to override these impulses. We suppress them. We push through. We go back to work. The result is often a body that carries unfinished stress cycles and a nervous system that struggles to reset.
Dr. Levine created Somatic Experiencing as a way to gently guide people back into connection with their instinctive ability to regulate and restore. By tracking sensation, supporting small shifts in the body, and building a felt sense of safety, SE offers a way to complete those incomplete stress responses—and reestablish inner balance.
Why Work With the Nervous System?
When we approach healing through the lens of the nervous system, we move beyond just understanding our stress—we begin to complete the cycles it creates in the body.
Rather than relying solely on insight (a “top-down” approach), Somatic Experiencing works from the bottom-up—starting with sensation, movement, and instinct. We listen for the body's subtle cues: a tightening, a release, an urge to move or be still. These cues are not random; they’re messages from the nervous system—and when we learn how to track them, we gain access to a deeper sense of agency, resilience, and internal flow.
Benefits may include:
Greater emotional range and flexibility
Reduced reactivity to everyday stress
A felt sense of safety in the body
Enhanced creativity, presence, and rest
Natural access to regulation, without force
What a Somatic Experiencing Session Might Include
SE sessions are gentle and collaborative. You might be invited to notice internal sensations, follow an impulse to stretch or shift your posture, or explore moments of stillness with attuned support. You may practice orienting to your environment, noticing what feels nourishing or neutral, or learning how to pendulate between activation and ease.
There’s often very little talking—at least in the traditional sense. Instead, the conversation is internal. What is your body telling you? Where is there ease? What wants to move?
You don’t have to be “good at mindfulness” or “comfortable in your body” to benefit from Somatic Experiencing. All you need is a willingness to slow down and get curious. The rest unfolds from there.
